Things to do - Getting Around Townsville On Your Mobility Scooter

Townsville is quickly becoming one of the biggest tourist hot spots in Tropical Far North Queensland. The city’s natural beauty and mobility scooter accessibility make it a great location for your next tropical getaway.

Best Places In Townsville To Visit On Your Mobility Scooter

Townsville has plenty to see and do while visiting with your mobility scooter. The Townsville City Council understands the importance of building a city that is accessible to tourists and locals. A few years ago, they partnered with BrioMetrix to create an interactive map to show accessibility in the city.

The city’s dedication to having great accessibility for its biggest tourist attractions makes it a great place to travel to. And below we are showcasing our favourite things to see and do while visiting.

Things to do - Getting Around Townsville On Your Mobility Scooter

Castle Hill Lookout

The enormous pink granite landmark in the middle of town is one of the must-see attractions when visiting Townsville.

The view of the hill from below is amazing, however, people who visit the top of Castle Hill are rewarded with a beautiful 360-degree view of the city below and the almost infinite blue Pacific Ocean.

The summit of Castle Hill also has an accessibility ramp to the lookout platform, which makes it a great place to visit on your mobility scooter.

The Beach Along The Strand

Townsville is home to some of the most pristine and picturesque beaches in Australia. The views of the water shining against the perfect blue sky are stunning. The beach along The Strand also has a two-kilometre-long footpath for locals and visitors to enjoy.

Recognising how important the beach is to all visitors, the Council has also recently worked to make the beach experience more accessible. Now between the hours of 10:30 am Friday and 3:00 pm on Saturday the council provides beach access mats to increase beach accessibility.

Magnetic Island

Magnetic Island is one of the gems of Far North Queensland. It is a must-visit for anyone who is visiting up north.

Many accessible ferries can take you from the mainland and out to Magnetic Island where you can explore the natural beauty of the island. Once on Magnetic Island, you will also be able to hire beach wheelchairs free of charge. The public bus on the island is also wheelchair accessible.

Reef HQ

If you are looking to learn more about Australia’s world-famous Great Barrier Reef while you are on holiday, Reef HQ is something you need to see. It is the National Education Center for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. It is also home to the largest living coral reef aquarium in the world. It also has easy access for mobility scooters.

Billabong Sanctuary

Just outside of the city is the Billabong Sanctuary, which is home to some of Australia’s most familiar faces including dingos, kangaroos, koalas, wombats, and much more. The Sanctuary is very accessible for mobility scooters, making it a great place to visit for anyone who wants to see some of Australia’s flora and fauna.
