As we age, our needs change, and sometimes we require a little extra help to maintain our independence. Home Care Packages (HCP) offer a lifeline to older Australians who require complex care in the comfort of their own homes.
Whether you need assistance with daily tasks or more intensive care, HCP provides a consumer-directed care approach, ensuring that the services you receive are tailored to your specific needs and goals. So, if you're looking for a solution that enables you to live safely and confidently in your own home, Home Care Packages could be just what you need.
Do I qualify for these services?
Your eligibility for Home Care Packages is determined based on your care needs, as assessed by a professional. HCP is designed for older individuals who require coordinated services to support their desire to live independently at home. Additionally, younger individuals with disabilities, dementia, or other care needs not met through other specialist services may also qualify.
Unlike other care programs, your financial situation does not impact your eligibility. However, Services Australia may perform an income assessment to determine your potential contribution to the cost of your care services.
How does it work?
Selecting a suitable care provider can make all the difference when it comes to meeting your unique care needs. Home Care Packages offer flexibility in selecting a provider that aligns with your values and objectives. Once you've chosen your provider, the government provides them with a subsidy to create a tailored package of care services to address your specific needs.
With four levels of funding (low, medium, intermediate and high) available, HCP can support you from basic care needs to high care needs. Together with your provider, you will collaborate to identify your care needs and determine how to best utilise your package funding. Your provider can also coordinate and manage your services on your behalf, allowing you to focus on what matters most: maintaining your independence and well-being.
What will it cost?
Three potential fees may apply to Home Care Packages:
- There may be a basic daily fee required by your care provider, based on the level of care package required.
- An income-tested care fee might be assessed by Services Australia, taking your income and financial situation into account.
- There may be additional fees for any extra care and services that fall outside your Home Care Package, and you will need to agree to these charges with your provider. By understanding the potential fees associated with your Home Care Package, you can make informed decisions regarding your care services and ensure that your needs are met within your budget.
How long will it take?
Although the typical wait time for Home Care Packages is approximately one to three months, the urgency of your needs can impact the length of time it takes to receive services. Individuals with more critical or pressing needs are given priority to receive care services, which may result in a shorter wait time. It's essential to be clear about your care needs and ensure that they are accurately assessed to avoid any potential delays in receiving the care services you require.
